Tangia in its region

        Tangia (Ay. Tangua/Τανγυα /'taŋwa/ "Tangua") oficially the State of Tangia (Ay. Teileā i Tangua/Τηλεά υ Τανγυα /'tejlea i 'taŋwa/), internally known rather as Tangua Hō’ūm/Τανγυα Χό'ύμ (ay. /'taŋwa hoːʔuːm/) - empire located on a large island south of Kyon's equator, west from its supercontinent. Known as the country of crossbows, the national ordinance, and lights, due to mass use of luminescent fluids collected from endemic animals (mainly amphibians) for production of light-emitting paint. Country known for its powerful navy and expansive behaviour towards oceanic countries. Inhabited by Tangians (Tanguarai/Τανγυαραι). It is located on the whole island bearing the same name (Nēimi i Tangua/Νήμι υ Τανγυα "the Island of Tangia"), the Remote Isles Group, and colonies. Giant armadillos (glyptodonts) are native to the island.

Tangia is a highly developed country with great handle of writing, it is the largest supplier of paper and ink in its part of the world. Its metalwork is highly valued. The country grasped optics, protecting the gained knowledge about scopes and telescopes for itself. A police-state with army as the highest importance. Tangia has a huge naval force (called Takatōa), possibly the largest in the world, and it is close to invincible on the seas (only the Secht Confederation, in defence, twice sunk the Tangian navy). On land, Tangian army is also formiddable, albeit more developed countries can defeat it.

Tangia as a project is led by Canis. It is one of the first and founding countries of project Kyon.

Country name

The word Tangia is of unknown original. It has been interpreted as the common name of the sea-folk, although it most likely is a later-coined interpretation. No related words are known in the Ayu language.

Between the English name "Tangia" and the original Ayu "Tangua" there is a vowel difference, the original "u" is pronounced as "i", this is a change to make the country name similar to names of many regions in the English language, where names often end in -ia.

Politics

Fairly recently, Tangia officially switched from its former federal system to absolute monarchy. The process was smooth and took its time, based on significant growth of popularity of the religious philosophical movement Yūl-Yōa (starry water). Remnants of its federal structure are still clearly seen in the country, where individual member states are formed as monarchies, presidential republics, or are based on traditional tribal system with extra-state representatives, however, currently their powers are significantly restricted by what Yūl-Yōa allows.

The national slogan of the Tangians is still "Ιχη φινεο υ'ιτα", that is, "only the first grace". In current times, often a soldier's chant is used: "Τανγυα χό'ύμ! Τανγυα χό'ύμ! Χό'ύμ! Χό'ύμ!" (Tangua hō’ūm! Tangua hō’ūm! Hō’ūm! Hō’ūm!). The word "χό'ύμ" ("hō’ūm") means "night" and refers to the ideological concept of spreading the Tangian authority across all oceans, much like night falls onto the horizon, in such a way, that there would always be a point of Tangian influence over which the starry night lasts.

Political system

Tangia is ruled by absolute authority of its emperor. The change of the federal system composed of kingdoms, republics and less relevant emperor into a centralised monarchy with real power based on a religious philosophical movement is relatively recent.

The former Tangian Commonwealth was ruled by the Highest Council, where representatives or monarchs of individual regions took their seats, plus the emperor, who acquired the throne in a dynastical manner. Last such emperor was Meinopau Rēiki (Μηνοπαυ Ρηκι) the "Dreary" (rēikei). After internal turbulence, Kaliā from the Yūl-Yōa sect became the next empress, and the sect became state ideology, with totalitarian rule restricting many citizens' freedoms (which Tangia during its federational times did not have too many anyway), but it also modernised and ideologically united the country.

Colonisation

Direction of naval expeditions, chiefly for trade and scientific ones, towards all seas of Kyon.

Tangia as a wealthy, highly developed country with high reputation and big ambitions, but ideologically restricted due to fear of the continent, has no other direction to develop than the seas. In the current day, there are many undiscovered, uninhabited or undeveloped isles that Tangia is capable of conquering, although due to significant distances it may not be able to efficiently control them.

Tangia permits slavery. The Tangian citizen cannot be a slave. Acquiring freedom is a grace, as for that a slave has to show more than just bravery and luck, but this is a rare occurrence. There exist mutual agreements between states, based on which power a Tangian citizen cannot be a slave in the other country, and also Tangia will refuse to recognise a citizen of said country as a slave. Prisoners are a different story.

State religion

A common feature for all Tangians in belief in Karāi (Καράι), that is, a spiritual energy originating in the sea. Tangians believe that they came out of water, but as emissaries of the submarine world, and it is their task to operate in the air (understood as: on the surface). Much as an ambassador cannot work efficiently without contact with his country, the Tangians cannot efficiently live in the air with severed connection to the sea. This results in fear from long exposure to the continent, the tightly packed lands which are disconnected from the karāi. It is believed that Tangians after death go into good afterworld through the Giant Whirl (this refers to the Milky Way, which on the starless part of the sky is very well visible from this point of cosmos), and where their work on Kyon will be evaluated.

Yūl-Yōa

There are many philosophical circles in Tangia, including sects (unrecognised by the state), among which the most important one in the last years - as it was made the official state religion and the only one permitted - is Yūl-Yōa (Γιύλ-Γιόα), meaning: Starry Water, Stars in the Water, Starry River, depending on understanding. It is from this sect that Yūl-Yōa Kaliā came from and around which a cult of personality formed, and who - much to dissatisfaction of the state Council - the last dynastical emperor Meinopau Reiki made his successor in face of absence of children of his own (even suspected), even if Kaliā was a mere orphan from the Marao Oasis.

Yūl-Yōa is a radical movement which claims that all Tangians share the same mission and such sharp internal divisions as utilised until recently (kingdoms/republics) were debilitating their mission in the air and will result in internal conflicts, which will devastate their purpose of "coming out of water". Tangia is meant to be strong and conquer other nations, so that they can cross the Giant Whirl on the sky, and it is the original kingdom, so to speak "on the other side", will decide what then.

The Yūl-Yōa movement in particular blames the loss of knowledge about what the world on the other side of the Whirl looks like on the now delegalised Council, its presidents and kings. It is believed that depriving the Tangians of ideology led to disastrous forgetting of their purpose in the air.

Significant advancements of Tangia in optics, especially in astronomy (telescopes) were motivated by the spiritual need to gaze into the Whirl, so that with that trick one would recover at least a tiny bit of knowledge about the Whirl. That same development of optics, including the invention of the refracting telescope and later the reflecting telescope (using mirrors) permitted the observations of the deep sky, and accidental discovery of many other whirls, including the big galaxy of Andromeda. Turbulent discussions take place within the Yūl-Yōa which are meant to theoretise about this discovery, however, it is generally agreed that it will not be possible to confirm any of those theories - this is the accepted state of beliefs, also by the inquisition.

The Yūl-Yōa supports labour, efficiency, ingenuity and being adamant. It claims that the entire nation works for its success.

Legality of religion

Other religions and philosophical systems are forbidden, as much like the already delegalised Council with its fixation on political divisions, they are merely a distraction from the assumed goals. In practice, this varies, especially the native beliefs of Deserts dwellers are tolerated (concerns only deserts on islands, where much effort is made to supply water; this does not concern dwellers of the continent). It is legally regulated in such a way to distinguish two types of dissenters:

• Heretics - all religions of foreigners can be observed in the designated places, where Tangians except administration have no access to. For displaying beliefs of such kind the law prescribes different types of punishment, depending on how influential a person/group is. The heretics can be directed to schools/universities, they may be fined, they may lose employment, they may be resettled, they may be placed in a gulag (work camp under severe labour and climatic conditions), ultimately, they may be executed.
• Native religions - these usually concern half-savage and savage peoples of the deserts and rainforests. They generally believe in similar ideas that most Tangians also do, though there are some key differences and especially common overinterpretations. Such people can be registered (many started doing that for safety), with description of their faith. The law states that such religions should be registered and they are forbidden, but it neglects to prescribe punishment, rendering them free of any punishment. This was a deliberate move and Yūl-Yōa openly communicated this to the public.
